1. Goals

1.1 Technical Goals

1.1.1 Length

It’s one of the points that define an international rower/sculler: LENGTH. If a club level sculler average a 95 degrees arch an international averages 110. We have to bear in mind that we are talking about effective length.

Training Approach:

1. Increase movement range from the hips. This movement requires timing on the knees and perception of weight control. You have to increase the distance between hands and hips without losing posture and trunk control.
2. Using the muscles around the waist will give you a chance of separate an idea of a good platform on your lower body, taking the most of the points of connection with the boat(seat and foot stretcher), and a feeling of floating on your trunk.
3. This will give you TIME on seat and the ultimate body control. The final result is EFFECTIVE EASY LENGTH!

This technical goal will be worked trough exclusive technical sessions regarding this point, static drills follow by dynamic ones, and finally video analysis.

1.1.2 Application of Power

What you should be looking for in this technical point is being able to use your body shape to accelerate the boat. Each one of you is limited by the dimensions of your body leading to small changes in your rowing style to take the most of what you have!

Training Approach:

1.Let the boat teach you the right timing for the placement. It’s the time to blend your body awareness with boat movement awareness; ones that you feel the hull, the boat will control the timing and you will be able to focus only on relaxing as way to change directions.
2.You are ready to create a reference point on the water to move the boat trough. The right amount of pressure on the face of the blade on the first 1/10 of the drive will give you the chance to move the boat and not the water. It’s time to get the STILNESS IN MOTION.
3.In this moment it’s time to talk about a control and effective leg drive. The smooth way that you put your heels back on the stretcher it’s essential to accelerate the boat without affecting the hull. Make sure that solid and steady hips control the leg drive and give you the chance of suspend your body weight on the handles. Remember you’re learning how to use your body to create power; CO-ORDINATION is a key in this process.
4.The 3 points above will result on acceleration of the hands on the last 1/6 of the drive. It’s quite important to define the point where you should cut of the power and the pressure in front of the handle to be able to perform a stable change of direction on the hands. To soon and you will create less power to late and the speed of the boat will affect the blade work and how smooth the hand movement as to be.

This technical goal will be worked by bungee work and technical session’s especially dynamic exercises that improve your knowledge about blade load.

1.1.3 Rhythm

Rhythm is just a result of the two skills above. Our approach starts always on the body control. Ones that you master your body will move to the next step: BOAT MOVEMENT AWARENESS

Training Approach:

1.Individual body movement awareness: Perform the right movement on the right time and that will result on the creation of rhythm. If you can to this point don’t overanalyse; ENJOY IT.
2.Individual boat movement awareness: How the boat reacts to my movements, what body changes will improve the speed of my boat?
3.EFFORTLESS SPEED.

This technical goal will be worked trough technical sessions and some land drills that will help you realize that rhythm is everywhere!!

1.2 Psychological Goals

Challenge your limits: Make sure you keep yourself focused through the training camp. You will be tired. It’s extremely important to keep your mind on your goals. This depends on you.
